Before the start I picked Kingussie as my team, it turned out to be the right decision as they put 4 past Fort William.

My other team didn’t fare so well unfortunately, going down 2-0 to Arbroath.

The Scottish Football League 2006/2007 kicks off today, and with it another season of predictable woe for East Stirlingshire.

I support a team from Glasgow, you may have heard of them, they play in blue and are disliked by lots of people. I have my reasons for supporting them but to be honest for a long itme I have felt that they aren’t very good. So, I have decided to adopt an additional team – I may as well support a smaller team with more scottish players for no good reason than a big team with lots of fans who do little good for Scotland.

But what team? I ruled out any Division 1 teams just because it didn’t feel right, and after that I decided that I would be just as well picking out of a hat which is what I did. First team up was East Stirlingshire. I’d left in my head a little proviso that if I didn’t feel right with any team I’d pick again but East Stirlingshire, what a team! How could I turn down an opportunity like that?

And so it begins a long hard season battling on the pitch against the other Division 3 clubs and off the pitch against Alan Mackin, the evil chairman of doom.

For a quick bit of research here are a few links to get you up to speed.
Wikipedia Entry
East Stirlingshire Mad

Today’s match :
at Home to Elgin City.
The Herald’s prediction for the season is us bottom and Elgin 3rd. My prediction for today: 2-1 to the shire.

The Herald Predicts for the season:
1st Stenhousmuir
2nd Dumbarton
3rd ElginCity
4th Arbroath
5th Montrose
6th Berwick Rangers
7th East Fife
8th Queen’s Park
9th Albion Rovers
10th East Stirlinghire

We’ll see about that!

Should he stay or go? I feel sorry for him, he’s done really well for Rangers, every season he’s gone through periods like this and often enough he’s pulled it off and won trophies. I’m sitting here listening to Jim Traynor on Radio Scotland, what an objectionable man, I can’t stand him, yet I find myself agreeing with him, some crackpot is on mouthing off saying all the players should be out the door tonight. Sounds like the sort of person who believes in the death penalty and sterilisation for those on the dole.

Who would we have to replace McLeish? Does it matter? I get a lot less worked up about football than I used to, I would just give up on it all and start supporting the Glasgow Warriors but the cost of watching them is about the same as SPL games and it’s on telly less than even the SPL. Maybe I’ll start going along to Firhill.

The big news now though is that Gordon Strachan will be the next Celtic manager, great! I think he’d be a great addition to the SPL, how well he’d do I don’t know but he’d certainly be interesting in his interviews. He doesn’t have the best track record in management so maybe it’d be good for Rangers if he is appointed. I know I championed him for the Scotland job but it’s a different type of job altogether, and besides I’m allowed to change my mind to suit the question.

The Tartan Army are looking to hi-jack the naming, by voting for Jim Baxter. Reason being his keepy-uppy routine in 67′. A legitimate reason for voting for him is that he is already in the Wembley Hall of Fame.

About 100-8.

So a lot’s happened in the week since I last posted, I had my birthday (thank you to everyone who got me stuff, gave me cards…), the Heir To All had his frist birthday, Bush won, and Berti resigned.

Then went on to blame everyone in the known world except himself and the devil. Today he has said the problem he failed was because of the mistakes made 15 years ago. He knew what he was getting himself into – after all everyone knew what state scottish football was in – but still blames his shortcomings on anyone other than that he can think of to save his reputation. It’s like a builder blaming his poor restoration of a building on the neglect it had suffered in the past rather than taking responsibility himself.

It’s that sort of logic that had been apparent throughout his tenure and bemused and disheartened every scot who once held hopes of an improvement. Now that he has left the post it’s time for him to come clean and save some of his dignity. Even if it was just to come out and say that the task was too big for him rather than persisting in passing the buck.
