404s and things

6:15 pm on the 2nd of May, 2006

Foolfillment has been on and off the last few days, it all seems to be working again if a little slowly - this is all because my host moved all of their servers over the weekend. I use them for all the websites I’ve got running at the moment (4 of them) and usually they’re pretty good, their support is excellent - really quick and personal. I hope that this doesn’t signal the begninnings of them turning into a bigger, more expensive company.

They’re Purple Cloud by the way, if you buy hosting from them remember to cite me so I can get a bit of commision!

Technorati Tags

12:06 pm on the 15th of February, 2006

You may have noticed I’ve started tagging each post (when I remember), I’m not sure why I bother really, I rarely come up with anything worthwhile to write, and it’s even less often I can come up with a good title, so you can imagine how hard I find it coming up with a few keywords, just take my last post as an example - hurrah for politicians??? What a waste of time!

stingy uni webmasters

11:05 pm on the 14th of February, 2006

Well, as a follow up to my post earlier, it seems the uni don’t allow student run sites to use databases on their servers, which leaves me with a problem - how do I run the GUPA site?

At the moment there is a page on Glasgow Uni’s space which redirects to a folder in the foolfillment domain and the GUPA site is run from there, using a database my hosts provide. I’d really like to make it freestanding and independent of foolfillment, mostly because in a little over a year I’ll be leaving the uni/club and won’t be able to carry on running the site. Having the site here isn’t a problem as such, it just isn’t right. I could try to convince the club to buy its own space and domain (spelunking.co.uk maybe?!) and run it from there, or I could maybe move all the files over to the uni server and still host the database here. The other alternative, which I really don’t fancy is to look for a solution that doesn’t use a database, or even any sort of CMS software and go retro with static pages that have to maintained with notepad.

Any ideas? I think I’ll suggest the club buy gupa.co.uk for the next couple of years.

Databases

8:43 pm on the 8th of February, 2006

I want to set up a database on the uni’s servers for the Potholing club. It’s one of the sort of things they might be sniffy about so I’ll have to make sure I’m asking the right people the right questions at the right time to make sure I get the answer I want. Other wise their website will continue to plunder foolfillment’s bandwidth for the foreseeable future.

Wordpress 2.0

11:16 am on the 17th of January, 2006

I got this email this morning so I’m going to have a shot at upgrading. I had been holding off until I’d had time to see a few other sites that had upgraded first, but here goes. If things look a bit pear shaped here then that’s why.

Hi,

We have detected that your WordPress blog scripts on foolfillment.co.uk
are being exploited in order to execute attacks from our server.

Could you please upgrade WordPress to the newest version as soon as
possible in order to close this hole.

Update: Well, that seemed to go akay, just finding my way around the new backend though, I have to say the new fancy page for writing and managing posts is horrible, the first thing I’ve turned off. Let me know if you spot and problems.

Skype me

7:25 pm on the 16th of January, 2006

In my continuing effort not to spend money where I don’t have to, I’ve got myself a Skype account so that I don’t have to pay for phone calls, I’ve even gone to the lengths of setting up an account for my Dad, that way the person I phone most often - my Mum - doesn’t have to go through the trauma that would inevitably result in her trying to sign up.

Then this evening I set out to buy a headset, ebay was the first and only port of call and maybe I should have done a bit more research but I think the gamble of a whole penny makes it a risk worth taking, should come in the next few days and then I’ll be all set. Those of you who need to add me to your contacts know what to search for so I’ll not put my username up here. Speak to you soon though.

Lordy’s Project

5:33 pm on the 3rd of December, 2005

Lordy, my brother and regular foolfillment commenter has been working on a fantastic idea, I don’t want to steal his thunder so will give him an opportunity to explain it in the comments, but first I will say that I can’t wait for the next iteration and am very excited about it - I can see it being made open for general use on the interwebnetthing, it is potentially a very popular project.

Athens

11:41 pm on the 7th of November, 2005

The Scotsman have opened up their digital archive to anyone with an Athens login. It adds to the things that are already available for students, with SCRAN and EDINA both full of interesting stuff about almost any topic. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, Athens is a system where online resources make their data/images/documents whatever available to students as long as they login through their university account. SCRAN is an image archive filled with masses of pictures to do with Scottish life, EDINA has a big library of films that can be used for educational purposes, but are interesting anyway.

Having seen it on Armin’s site here’s a map of where my readers are from. Having only just set it up, it’s very empty so go on and humour me by adding yourself to it.

Could we set up one for GUFF?
