John Boyd Orr’s Birthday

9:01 am on the 23rd of September, 2005

Today is the birthday of John Boyd Orr, he won a nobel peace prize don’t you know. He did so much commendable work that the University of Glasgow named this lovely building after him.

Actually, that’s quite a complementary photo of it, usually it looks quite grim.

Anyway, read more about him on wikipedia

GUVMA RODEO 2005

5:36 pm on the 25th of April, 2005

Organised and run by the students of Glasgow University Veterinary Medical Association (GUVMA), the Rodeo has been an annual event of Glasgow University Veterinary School since the days of Buccleuch Street when it was a riding show. Since then the tradition has moved on to become the largest charity fundraiser associated with the University of Glasgow.

This year we will be celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Rodeo at the Garscube Estate which will be held on Saturday 30th April at the same location as last year, the Garscube Estate, home of the Veterinary School.

Last year’s rodeo was a a phenomenal success raising ?12,000 for various charities as well as entertaining, raising awareness of animal related issues and allowing participants a chance to get close to many different creatures ranging from horses to snakes. The day was spectacular with over 6000 visitors, twice the previous year with events including dog shows, falconry displays, reptile handling and a small mammal show.

Thoughts on Glasgow

8:53 am on the 14th of March, 2005

croila has written about what the atmosphere was like in Edinburgh yesterday with the Welsh invasion, it was a bit like that in Glasgow yesterday too. Even though the game was in Edinburgh there were still hoardes of Welsh roaming the streets between train journeys and waiting for the pubs to open.

It made it seem much friendlier than usual. It seems whenever a large group of one nationality or other are in town the mood of the natives lifts. There’s big talk of the Glasgow banter and how the weegies are really friendly but I’ve never seen it except when they are talking to outsiders.

It reminds me of the couple in Father Ted who are always fighting and arguing untill the see Father Ted when they become lovely and happy and chatty.

Like that couple the glaswegians seem to hate each other but love everybody else.

I am fond of sweeping generalisations, they’re so much more fun than being diplomatic.

I’ve been charged with the task of running the caving club website. I wonder where I start.

Rectorial Elections

9:18 am on the 15th of December, 2004

The official election for the post of Rector for the University will take place today, I urge every student at Glasgow Uni to make that oh-so-long walk to the nearest polling booth to vote and make sure we get a rector this time around, having been with a student voice on the senate for about a year. You can see the candidate list here.

They don’t exactly show off any skills as a photographer I may have but at least they are of a nice building. As usual, click to enlarge.

A slightly sad story

3:31 pm on the 1st of December, 2004

A few weeks ago, I was walking along Gibson street with someone on my course and we saw a cat run across the road in front of a car or van or something. It made it across just and then carried on running and dived throught the ironwork of the Bridge over th Kelvin, so we went and had a look to see if it had fallen in, there’s a little ledge on the other side which had a few pawprints on it and then nothing. No sign of it either end of the bridge, nothing obvious down below in the river, we jut supposed it had bounded a little further along the ledge and got away safely.

The other morning though I saw a sign on a lampost asking after a missing cat.

The Shack gets gutted by fire

BBC NEWS | Scotland | Huge fire destroys club building

The Shack is one of the scummiest places you might ever wish to not end up in and finding out it had burnt down made me whoop with delight (no, really it did) yet it is a mixed blessing for anyone on a night out in Glasgow. You now know you won’t be going there but there is the downside that those who enjoy that sort of thing now are more likely to be where you are.

Apples & Oranges

8:20 pm on the 7th of October, 2004

and lots of them. Good for beating off fresher’s flu you see. Every new term without fail I feel bunged up with rubbish germs. It wouldn’t bee so bad but it’s never a proper cold or illness, just enough to make me struggle to concentrate and make me cough and sniffle but not really enough to justify taking a day off. Bah!

However things to cheer me up:

  • the man from orange trying to say Sauchiehall Street (I should have known he’d struggle as soon as he said Saint Ehnock Centre)
  • The new album by the Delgados
  • That I’m going to see the Delgados on Saturday
