SCRAN

12:55 am on the 29th of June, 2005

Just stumbled upon this site of images, there’s tonnes of stuff for Dunbar, good stuff too, old postcards and things, a photo from Miss Dunbar in 1973 (wasn’t that the year my Mum and Dad moved to the town?), Even a photo of the old Roxburgh Hotel. I could spend all night looking through it but I’d better get to bed.

(see what happens when you say you’re taking a break from blogging, a hundred things come along that you have to write about)

The Rocks

12:26 am on the 29th of June, 2005

Just a quick one, I’m working really…

experiencetherocks.co.uk is the new home for the place I’m very kindly being allowed to work for at the moment. First page went up today, and more will be done when I get back in August and can get some better photos. It might not work for the next day of two while it settles into existance, newborn domains seem to like spending time asleep like newborn people. I’m just trying to get it noticed by google et al for now.
Just one problem at the moment and that is the use of inline-block for the nav (which consists of one button at the moment but will be four along the top) It doesn’t work in firefox and isn’t valid but does make it look nicer in IE, which is, if I’m being honest, the browser of choice for the expected user.

Cliff accident

8:50 pm on the 6th of June, 2005

Something is going on outside, there were two policemen looking about The Glebe (the grassy patch outside my house) who suddenly spotted something along the coast a little bit and sped off in that direction, followed shortly by a fire engine, then the coastguard, and then the lifeboats, who must have been out on an exercise, and came over from the west. So it looks unfortunately like someone or something has fallen over one of the cliffs. I can’t go out to investigate because I have to be in to answer the phone if anyone needs a vet.

I can’t remember anything similar happening in recent years but there was a few accidents when I was still in primary school, about 10 years ago. There is a cliff opposite my house that people jump off into the sea during summer, sometimes though, people don’t realise that the tide needs to be in for them not to break something, or maybe they hit the cliff on the way down. Either way it’s not very safe, and really just pretty stupid. So that used to happen every now and then, this time though it’s round the corner from where I can see, I hope whoever it is is alright.

Update: It turns out it was a couple of boys stranded by the tide, as far as I know neither were hurt. That put your minds at rest didn’t it?

Further Update: Here’s the full story from the local rag, what I had heard wasn’t quite true, one boy broke his leg and the hadn’t been stranded by the tide, they’d fallen trying to get a ball.

Dunbar Website

4:38 pm on the 20th of May, 2005

The website for the town where I grew up and still live when not at uni was recently overhauled. Before it was quite simple layout, easy to navigate and overall it was quite comfortable to use – even though it used frames. The new version though I don’t like.

Now, I do not claim to be a great designer or an expert on how information should be laid out but I am a user and I know what I like, and I find using the new site a chore. It is a user nightmare, which is a shame because it could be, and indeed was, a good tool for promoting the town. (more…)

How well do you know Dunbar?

2:54 pm on the 20th of May, 2005

Take a short quiz to see how well you know local landmarks. You have to be registered unfortunately, which is a major user deterrant, but more of that later…

Walkwise

10:19 am on the 26th of April, 2005

One of the first articles on a new magazine written by Cameron McNeish is a walk around Dunbar.

Walkwise, Dunbar

What is the better name?

3:04 pm on the 14th of December, 2004

The Rocks or the Craig En Gelt?

The hotel which has possibly the best view of any property in Dunbar has changed hands and opened up as a restaurant a few days ago, and while I’m sure it’s much nicer now and serves far better food than before, is there still a pub? And why did they have to change the name? Anyway I can’t wait to go sometime when I get free of Glasgow for a wee while on Friday for Christmas.

Update: And now I work for them!, even design their website
