Scrounging for yet more advice

7:59 pm on the 6th of May, 2008

You might see a theme developing here, I’m basically just asking for people to give me lots of their ideas, under the guise of sharing good practice ;-) Today’s theme is how to set up a classroom.

In August I will have the amazing luxury of having my very own classroom, this is something that is almost unheard of for a Tech teacher, and as such it is not something I’ve given much thought to. Since getting the Hawick post I’ve been thinking a little about what I could do to the layout of desks, or what resources I should have out - that sort of thing. Having never had my own room before though I’ve never been through all the practicalities of it and I’m sure I’ll have forgotten or overlooked important things.

So, I’m asking those of you out there who may have something to say to say it. If you were starting from scratch in a new room what 5 things would you do?

Plants, great! The sort of thing I always forget.

    I want

    - to get up loads of maps of the world,

    - to have loads of light areas (and an easy way of making it dimmer for creating a bit of a different, more relaxing atmosphere)

    - loads of examples of lovely objects, not necessarily the sort of ting that the pupils will make, in fact different but things that can inspire ideas of how to work the materials - I always like my pencil blocks to be much more than just cuboids with 20 holes.

    - some sort of dual screen setup - so I can have up stuff that is useful like pictures of notes, and somewhere I (or the pupils) can be working on like a web browser. (At home I always have a web browser open.)

    - no obvious area that is the front of my room. I am not an actor, I do not require a stage ;-) I am a participant and my fellow participants should get equal billing!
