Possibly halfway between, introduce it as an activity that you expect them to do, but encourage them to take control of it. Do it regularly but with longish times in between, allow for the pupils to take the initiative and suggest when it is appropriate.

But then, I've not manages either, maybe with this new time table I'm about to start on Monday. (yes, another new timetable...)

Truth is that I also don't really know how I'll fit class blogging into my classes either. We are stumbling along together and it seems to be working. (Maybe, this term, we can do it a little more structured) Also when I'm in the workshop, we've got our digital camera out for anyone to take pictures with (lol - funnily enough they don't take any of me) and if a pupil finishes early or there is an opportune moment I send them off to the graphics room to write up what they were doing on the computer.

I'd like to know though... do people find that it is better a regular, 'official' occurance in the classroom or is a more organic, 'when it suits' approach better?

It's good to be back!

I do feel a little trapped by time this year and what I'm expected to be teaching. While there is a fair bit of flexibility in the department we still have to cover enough for the pupils to pass the exams - Standard Grades a year earlier than most other schools - which makes things a little tight. And being an NQT doesn't make it easier, even with 0.7 timetable periods are still only 50 minutes long.

Thanks for 2 useful links, the 1st I must have missed, the 2nd I remember but hadn't looked into since it was posted and missed the discussion. Coming out of uni I felt like a lot of what I was doing there was finding the hoops and jumping through them, at least there was still a large amount of freedom when out on placements to try out what we fancied; now doing teaching for real finding the time to do the things I'd like is pretty hard because of a new set of hoops.

I think there is a connection between the 2 problems, lack of time and lack of freedom of choice. Both can come from too much control, might be linked to another John Connell post: Subverting Scotland’s Simplified Curriculum. There seem to be more and more thing we 'have to' do and less room of some things we would like to do.

Good to see you back again
Your PC policy Problems takes me back to Posts by Neil Winton (Mr Dubua) and John Connell from Dec 06.
It really captures the tensions on both sides but clearly states well where the balance point should be
