New SFL Season

11:12 am on the 5th of August, 2006

The Scottish Football League 2006/2007 kicks off today, and with it another season of predictable woe for East Stirlingshire.

I support a team from Glasgow, you may have heard of them, they play in blue and are disliked by lots of people. I have my reasons for supporting them but to be honest for a long itme I have felt that they aren’t very good. So, I have decided to adopt an additional team - I may as well support a smaller team with more scottish players for no good reason than a big team with lots of fans who do little good for Scotland.

hat drawBut what team? I ruled out any Division 1 teams just because it didn’t feel right, and after that I decided that I would be just as well picking out of a hat which is what I did. First team up was East Stirlingshire. I’d left in my head a little proviso that if I didn’t feel right with any team I’d pick again but East Stirlingshire, what a team! How could I turn down an opportunity like that?

And so it begins a long hard season battling on the pitch against the other Division 3 clubs and off the pitch against Alan Mackin, the evil chairman of doom.

For a quick bit of research here are a few links to get you up to speed.

    Traitor!!

I have, as you well know, the same allegiance as you. Like you, I’ve known that on the field, they ain’t been up to the mark recently. Too many players who aren’t fit to pull on the jersey, a manager who had no clear idea of how they should play. But unlike you, I know that these things change, and when they don’t, you don’t leave them, deny them or dilute your allegiance.

If you really want another team to support, heres a few ideas.
    1. Your local junior team. either where you live just now, or where you grew up. Up to you.
    2. An English or other foreign team. I have one of these. In memory of my grandfather. They play in black and gold, and could probably beat the Shire. I say probably because their new manager is likely to ensure relegation this season. If you don’t know who they are, this is how Roy Keane described the new manager - to his face
    “you’re a liar… you’re a f**king w*nker. I didn’t rate you as a player, I don’t rate you as a manager, and I don’t rate you as a person. You’re a f**king w*nker and you can stick your World Cup up your a*se. I’ve got no respect for you.”

The reason I’ve adopted another team is nothing to do with the first team’s performance, I have no doubt that they will be vastly improved this season, and anyway no one could accuse me of being a glory seeker for beginning to support East Stiringshire, that is clearly not the case.

It isn’t a case of diluting my support, the notion of attaching myself to a team who I have no real connection with seems wasteful, but I will continue to be keen to hear about how they do and hope the win - it’s not something I can just turn off. I will though be keeping an eye out for another team and hoping that they win. One more person who supports ESFC will be more noticible than one person stopping supporting RFC.

Anyway, I’m not a traitor - that would imply that my support for East Stirlingshire will impact negatively on RFC, I see it more as an ambassadorial role.
