[...] Lordy is letting me work on his PHP project*, which is very nice of him as I break it a lot. I add bits of code here and there and try to make it look a little prettier, while he builds it all and makes it actually work and has ideas about what it should do and how it should do it. I’ve been working on the actual code that makes the site run (it is running, those of you who know the site know this already, those of you who have no idea what it is don’t need to for this story, but I have written about it in an earlier post) and making changes happen ‘live’ as it were, this is fine as long as I don’t break it. Anyway, Lordy has been working on the code that he has running on his machine, this is fine because if he breaks something then the real site still works. [...]

You've met people who would use it, eh? It's a funny old game. I must admit I've had a few weeks off it. I've been too busy buying Christmas presents...

well, I've had a few people who think they would use it. And, yes, it would work perfectly with google ads

well, if it was the sort of site that other people would use, it would be an advertisers dream. If you could set it up so that as people clicked on DVD's to bag them, they automatically got offered a link to HMV's or amazon's site to buy said dvd, or similar, that is. If it was a site people used, that is.

I couldn;t put t better, I tried in a draft post but you put it much more succinctly.

I'd like to see jst how relevant it is to other families. That we already have two families outside of our own says something deesn't it?

Well, I was away at the weekend. Sorry for leaving the post hanging on like that.

Now that you bigged it up so much, it'll sound fairly rubbish but...

Since we have a large family, every year at Christmas, we make a Christmas list. I don't think most people do this, but we do. It's to give ideas of what we want for Christmas. We all have partners now, though, and so having twelve lists on the go was getting impractical - you picked what you wanted to buy for people, then phone everyone and check they weren't buying it. As a result, it took forever, and everyone knew what everyone was getting, which kind of spoils things a bit.

I decided to do a website which would administer the lists. So with my new website, you can log on, create a list, then add everything you want to it. Once someone else has added a list, you can view their list, choose what you're buying them, and mark it as bought - effectively bagging it. It takes it off the list, effectively, so nobody else would see it, and conceivably even know it had been on the list. The owner of the list, however, would still see the whole list, without knowing what had been bought.

It's a fairly simple, but useful site, I think. There are various other features, where you can leave comments which everyone but the list owner can see, so you can buy certain parts of the item, or suggest buying something between you.

You could have stolen my thunder, Stuart. I bet you could have explained it better....

I imagine next Christmas it could be up for open access, though I don't know how people find out about it. Already there are three different families using it, and only see lists for people in their families.

I'm quite pleased with it. Lots of improvements to be made still though.....

(tho its popularity re general use will depend on how typical a family we are)
