The Pope
4:05 pm on the 5th of April, 2005So, an old man has died, it’s quite sad. But how much money is now being spent by people travelling to Rome; on security for the funeral; on the free water and red cross aid; how much money is lost by people taking time off work suddenly? How much money could instead be given to help the starving in Africa or those who were hit by the earthquake last week, or any other just cause.
So, instead of going to Vatican City to pay your respects, try doing something worthwhile.
I don’t want to get into a theological debate, I just want to say that I think the whole thing stinks, as the man himself will by the time the last ‘mourners’ get herded past him on Thursday.

Charming.
It’s the funeral today, as you’ll know (in fact it may be on right now). On the radio this morning, they said that they were showing highlights on BBC 1at 7:30. I thought that was an interesting way of describing funeral coverage.

I’m not a terrible sanctimonious person, but I tend to agree with the above. Why bother, and why does it take a “death” to make people suddenly go all that way to see a dead man…
Unfortunately his doctrine is part of the reason there are so many in Africa still starving and ravaged by Aids.
