On the BBC

1:05 pm on the 30th of January, 2004

We all await with bated breath the announcement that the team from Blue Peter presented the Iraq conflict with a pronounced anti-war bias by not showing the kiddies how to build their own Mark 77 firebombs with some kerosene, a few pipe cleaners and an empty detergent bottle.

Click here to find out why.

No Snow

4:41 pm on the 29th of January, 2004

After yesterday’s brief blizzard there hasn’t been any more snow in Glasgow, but it seems that there was a zoo break, according to this morning’s BBC Breakfast programme there were hundreds of drivers out braving the elephants.

Snow

10:48 am on the 28th of January, 2004

That’ll be the blizzards they were talking about then. To paraphrase Douglas Adams, the threat of snow had been hanging around in the air in exactly the way bricks don’t. It was obviously keeping us in suspense and then BANG! it was there, battering my window.

I’m supposed to be going to the dogs tomorrow, but this could put a cap on the idea really couldn’t it?

An exiting time

1:16 pm on the 27th of January, 2004

Will we be without a Primeminister tomorrow? Probably not, but if we were, what would happen? Would there just be a leadership election in the Labour Party or do they have to call a general election (surely if it’s found that the government lied then they have to?) I should probably know but I don’t whereas you probably do.

And what are your predictions for tonights result? My prediction is a narrow home win. Particularly after Nick Brown switched sides.

London 2012

1:33 pm on the 16th of January, 2004

London 2012

In general I think the Olympics being held in London would be good for UK sport, but why London? In fact why should the Olympics be held in just one city anyway when other major events (Football and Rugby World Cups, Football’s European Championships etc) are held in whole countries. Obviously I realise that these examples all need the same sort of stadia and it isn’t logical to put 12 stadiums in one city and leave other cities without but if the olympics were held in a country rather than one city then new facilities could be spread around and be of benefit for the whole country. It doesn’t make sense and is totally unfair to give one city - beit a capital or not - a brand new athletics stadium, brand new swimmping pool and diving pool, brand new sports halls AND the income from hosting a majpr world event. And why if the games have to be hosted by just one city should it be London? Wouldn’t a more centrally placed city be better. It’s more likely to leave tourists keen to travel the rest of the country than a city right at the bottom. It’s harder/more expensive to get to than other cities from most places. And it gets a lot of tourist anyway being the capital.

And what a horrid logo they’ve chosen for their bid.

5:24 pm on the 14th of January, 2004

School Experience

8:58 pm on the 11th of January, 2004

For two weeks starting tomorrow morning I’m following a programme of school experince at my old grammar school in Dunbar, it’s a bit scary but definitely something I’m looking foward to.

In terms of workload it shouldn’t be very taxing at all, the only preperation I’ve had to do is get a whole load of new shirts and a few ties - the only ones I had before where to fit the uniform and I’m going to be recognised by a fair few of the pupils as it is. It’s all observation with the chance to do some small group teaching and it should be a lot of fun.

I’m going to set up a separate (hidden) weblog to jot down any thoughts - some may migrate here - because I’m sure blogging has a huge potential in education, be it for planning lessons or orgainising drafts of work or collating people’s thoughts during group work.

Power Idle

1:18 pm on the 7th of January, 2004

It’s been in the news on and off for about a year, I think I have a fair bit to say but I need some time to clarify my scattered opinions about it. I’ll come back here with some more coherant speech soon but for now here’s some links to get you thinking.

oh and Happy New Year.
