come on, noisy up

3:31 pm on the 18th of November, 2003

The latest piece of work I have to do is a short essay on 20th Century Design History with the brief :

‘ “No matter what things you study, you will always find that those which are good and useful are also graced with beauty” - Baldassare Castiglione, 1528.
Discuss the influence of aesthetics on the success anf failure of two examples of the same product within the context of 20th century design and consumer trends.’

The 2 examples I’ve chosen are the Lloyds Building in London and the Sydney Opera House. When I’ve got it written I’ll hand it in and then post it up here, but till then how about a discussion about that sort of thing?

I assume Lordy went to the Opera House when he was in Oz but I can’t remember, Big Bruv usually has something to say about any subject and I know from log reorts that there are people out there who read this site quite often but never comment so, for a starting point, the Opera House has become something of an icon that everyone recognises and brings millions to the Austrailian economy. Does Scotland need a similar sort of thing to boost it’s economy? The Falkirk Wheel is a good start isn’t it, but who outside the UK, Scotland even, has heard of it?

Come on what do you think?

on buses

4:31 pm on the 17th of November, 2003

Whenever you’ve been waiting at an unfamiliar bus stop for 10 minutes and you see the bus you want to get, stop at the other bus stop that you’ve only just noticed 20 yards away then of course the only thing you can do to retain your ’street cred’ is to wait untill the bus that does stop at your bus stop arrives and get on regardless of it going completely the wrong way to where you wanted to go, for a long enough time so not to arise suspicions about your ineptitude.

me, a designer?

7:27 pm on the 16th of November, 2003

So I’ve been thinking about what to do over Christmas this year. I’d quite like to get a job for a while, with the Post Office or the like. Someone who needs extra people over the festive period but I can’t think what I’d like to do and I’ve left it too late for most places. I don’t really have long this Christmas - only about three weeks -so it rules out most things straight away.

One thing I could maybe do to make some money is start designing websites for other people’s money (’but’, I hear you say, ‘is there really much call for sites that showcase the US dollar bill and the Swiss shilling coin?’ and to you I say ‘Oh shush, you’re just being silly and you’re distracting me.’) but who would want me to design their site for them? I’m not very good at it you see, or at least I don’t think I am. Also how much could I charge for it? I think if I could be bothered to research and advertise it I could maybe make a few bob. But can I? Of course not, that’s why I need some encouragement and pointers.

Scotsman.com News - 100 Best Scottish Albums

6:53 pm on the 11th of November, 2003

Of the top 25 in the Scotsman’s top 100 scottish albums I own 4 and have heard 5 or 6.

and 2 of them were texas and travis.

not that i have enough money to form a valid opinion or anything but what a rubbish list.

From the rest I’ve heard 8 and there were a whole load that I should have heard, like arab strap and lloyd cole (i didn’t know he was scottish? or the beta band for that matter) and various others.

I’m sure big bruv will have something to say on this, no doubt it’ll be ‘you should read the herald - it’s better’. (I do - it is)

Weekend on Mull

3:46 pm on the 11th of November, 2003

With no reason not to, Morven and I decided to spend the weekend on Mull. We travelled up on Friday by train to Oban and the Ferry across. On Saturday pretty much everywhere was closed but it was still a much better place to be than Glasgow and we wandered around Tobermory where we were staying. We finished it all off with a 21 mile cycle to Craignure on Sunday to catch the ferry back.

All in all, a really pleasant way to spend a weekend.

And I bet you’re all singing the Balamory song now aren’t you?

unfit

10:37 am on the 7th of November, 2003

This is soon to open I believe : The Adventure Centre-Ratho. I’ve not been climbing enough recently and when I went on Wednesday I found it really hard, I just don’t have the fitness anymore, I feel like I’m in the worst shape of my life, how much that says I don’t know because it’s hard to be as fit as I was when I was swimming 7 times a week but I have so much free time on my hands that there’s no excuse not to go swimming or something. I’m going to start going to volleyball again next week hopefully and when the Glasgow Climbing Centre finish their bouldering room then I should be going there more often.

On an unrelated note, the fireworks on Glasgow Green last night were pretty good and that’s all I’ll say about them because if I complain I’ll get told off for being to grumpy and if I enthuse toommuch hen I’ll be told I’m a liar. Oh well.
