National Anthem

4:33 pm on the 27th of November, 2003

“God Save The Queen is the national anthem of the United Kingdom, it’s not the national anthem of any of the individual countries,” said the Labour peer.

As far as I’m aware God Save The Queen is the anthem of all the individual nations and as such what should happen is Scotland, Ireland and Wales should sing it before their matches. No? Not that anyone pays any attention to what Mr Watson says.

Are you being serious? They used to sing it, and it just doesn’t work. Can you really imagine Hampden park belting out the British anthem? I don’t think so.

On the other hand, England shouldn’t be stopped singing it. I don’t care what they sing. Except for Swing Low, that negro slave song, confusingly adopted to represetn a rugby team. Thats just annoying.

oh no no no no, that’s not what I meant. I was saying that if we were to take things as literally as he is, then we should be made to sing God Save The Queen. My point was that he was mis-interpreting things, at least as I understand them.

Goodness no, we shouldn’t actually sing it

I was going to say - does that include the verse that’s all about destroying the hated Scot in battle, or something?

  4. Republic

Possibly the most boring tune in the world, except the new single from Michelle of Pop Idol. It does include a verse with the lines ‘And then with a mighty rush, The rebellious Scots we’ll crush’ in one version at least
