6 steps
9:27 pm on the 12th of May, 2003How do you get from Joy Division to BB King in 6 steps?
You know that thing where people say everyone is connected to everyone else in 6 or less steps? It’s a load of rubbish isn’t it? But i was thinking of something similar the other day. I saw a poster advertising a Stone Roses gig. (They haven’t reformed have they?) I was thinking it could be some gig if they got all the groups that are in some way connected : The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, The Seahorses, John Squire and Ian Brown. Loads and loads.
You could do the same sort of family tree with Blur, gorillaz, elastica, Graham Coxon. Oh and before I forget what is the new blur album like? The reviews on amazon don’t sound too promising and I feel if I get it then it’ll just get played once or twice then get left on the shelf beside other albums by bands that should have given up long ago.
Any other huge family tree things you can think of, big bruv must have a few.

chances are the poster was for a tribute band.
But it’s an old thought about family trees. Especially when you allow guest vocalists. For instance, to expand yours, Boby Gillespie started out as drummer for JAMC. And one of the Reids went out out with Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star, and played on their albums. And she now records with the drummer from MBV (sorry, i’m at workm being quick and abbreviating). And Kevin Shields plays in the Primals, so I’m back there. But Booby Gillespie has guested vocals for the Chemicals, on the same track as Barney Sumner. And he appeared on the last NewOrder album too. Which brings in Smashing Pumpkins, cos Billy Corgan played on their last tour, Monaco, Revenge, Joy Division and best of all, Electronic. Cos that gives you the Smiths, the Pet Shop Boys and the Healers. And The The, cos Johnny Marr was in them for an album and a tour. I’d better stop now.
But others? Start withe the Crucial Three, Julian Cope, Ian McCulloh and Pete Wylie. And how many can you link B&S too? Once you use their links to Future Pilot AKA, you have the delgados, the pastels and the fannies. You never really stop.

BB King played on a record with U2. When NME voted Joy Division’s Transmission the best single of all time earlier this year, Bono the rent-a-quote described Joy Division as the reason they formed, and Ian Curtis’s voice as ‘holy’.
(Less than) 6 steps is easy.

joy division to new order (obvious) to electronic (again obvious) to pet shop boys (you’ve covered all of this already). pet shop boys covered ‘where the streets have no name(can’t take my eyes off of you)’ originally by u2 (but without the bit in brackets). u2, like you said did a song with BB King
easy.

Dad went to school with Gordon Brown, who serves as Chancellor of the exchequer under President Blair, who has a hot-line to the President of the US.

Okay. Taking the starting point of Primal Scream and running in a direction more agreeable to me we have the genius Andrew Weatherall who produced parts of Screamadelica. He also produced parts of the brilliant One Dove album Morning Dove White. One Dove were headed by Dot Allison (Scottish lass, career tragically interrupted by a motor accident) who is presently touring with Massive Attack. From there you can go in any number of directions with Shara Nelson, Tricky, Tracey Thorn, Liz Fraser. But I’ll stop at that with something of a dream line up for the night:
One Dove kick things off lightly while the punters are still toddling in and hanging up the jackets. Massive Attack (the full compliment plus all previous guest vocalists) start soulful before darkening things up prior to the finale; a long, grimy set from Andrew Weatherall. He can either dj or do the live thing as Two Lone Swordsmen with Keith Tenniswood. I’m honestly not that fussed.
