SPL curtain raiser idea
12:43 pm on the 27th of February, 2003SFA chief executive David Taylor last night revealed he is close to finalising plans to stage an annual All-Star football game as a curtain raiser to the Scottish season.
Scotland’s own Charity Shield will pitch Berti Vogts’ national team against an SPL Foreign Select at Hampden four days before the start of the new season in August.
Taylor is confident the ambitious concept which would see Rangers and Celtic stars Henrik Larsson, Johan Mjallby, Lorenzo Amoruso and Ronald de Boer line-up in the same team against Scottish team- mates Barry Ferguson and Paul Lambert will take place.

I’ve heard about this. This is another of Berti Vogts ideas which he introduced in Germany when he was coach there, and which is still going strong, and annually raking in cash for charities. Vogts wants the Scottish money to go towards improving grass-roots football (I don’t think he means that as opposed to astro-turf).
I think its a great idea, though it’ll be irritating watching all the Old Firm fans flock to support the foreign team. And don’t tell me they won’t. At the Scotland Ireland game, the away section was filled with Celtic fans, and I don’t think its only the green side of the Evil Empire which is a bit partisan, and has their mind outside of Scottish football.
